![Stock photo: Scotch Heather (Calluna vulgaris). This plant is an ornamental evergreen shrub with tiny pink flowers, each only 3/32” x 1/8” long / diameter (2 mm x 3 mm), and the flower racemes (the long clusters) grow up to 3” (7.5 cm) long. The plant itself is low [1-2 ft (30-60 cm) tall] and somewhat sprawling. When flowering you notice the shrub’s slight pink color, but the flowers are so small you can barely discern that the color comes from them. Cultivated / Domesticated. This shrub with its slightly waxy leaves is found on the edges of may forested areas where they transition into the drier open sagebrush areas. The yellow 5-petal disk-like flowers are about 1.4 inch diameter and the shrubs grow to a couple feet high.
