  • Stock photo: Based on comments from Andrew Weller with respect to this image lacking a real emphatic subject, thought I’d use this space to talk about my intentions when I took this shot. Let me first assure I am in no way offended or challenging Andrew’s perspective. On contrary, he also provided very gracious comments about image overall. Reality is I’m not sure I really had a particular object in mind as subject of image when I took it. Perhaps that was my first novice mistake, but I was actually trying more to capture experience/effect of snow as much as a particular subject. I do however, recall giving a lot of thought to several aspects of the composition. For example, I was trying to create depth with convergence of shoreline behind center clump of trees. In fact, I intentionally included branches in lower right foreground to emphasize layering/depth. I was also trying to maintain some balance to image by including tree clump on left side. In retrospect, I now find the taller tree as well as some of the branches at left edge of image to create unnecessary distraction & may try to clone them out and/or crop lower on sky which could emphasize overall depth perspective even more. I was also very cognizant of shadows on ice & liked effect they added, so paid particular attention to trying to take shot from low angle to optimize both ambiance & depth effect created by those shadows.Don’t know how effective my choreographing was, but those were objectives in composing shot. Andrew’s fb has encouraged me to look at image again and in so doing, I have discovered potential to improve on it with further cloning & cropping. One other irony ... a few months back, another rater’s comments indicated “subject" is interesting & holds viewer’s attention. I wonder which "subject" they had in mind when they looked at the image??I may never know, but thanks again to both Andrew & that anonymous rater for taking time to critique this image and provide me valuable feedback
