  • Stock photo: Named for the red waxlike tips on its secondaries, this social bird travels in large flocks in the nonbreeding season and may even nest in loose colonies. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may serve a signaling function in mate selection. The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few temperate dwelling birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Unlike many birds that regurgitate seeds from fruit they eat, the Cedar Waxwing defecates fruit seeds. At times, the Cedar Waxwing can become so intoxicated on over ripe fruit that it cannot even fly. It is also, however, vulnerable to alcohol intoxication to the point of death after eating fermented fruit.

  • Stock photo: I came across some very busy barn swallows gathering up mud and straw for their nests. I have tried getting shots of barn swallows before, but opportunities have generally been either under a roof, eve, or somewhere dark and high. I got a little luckier this time. They were working out of a very small muddy rut in the road where I was able to pull my truck up to within eight feet or so and just wait for them as they came back several times. I caught this shot where the female seems to be taking charge ... and pretty strategic on her part, I must say ... note that the male has a mouth full of mud!

  • Stock photo: I came across this lone barn swallow gazing out over a field. I would have preferred that he was perched on a branch, but he wasn’t taking requests that day. It took a while to get close enough for decent shots, but this was probably within about 15 feet. He was watching me very closely as I took shots at 35 feet, 30 feet, etc. and when I got this close, I could really see him getting nervous. A couple times he just kinda shimmied along the fence about 6 inches farther away from me. After a few shots at this 15 foot distance, he decided it was time to depart.

  • Stock photo: I think this is a juvenile oriole, but if anyone believes otherwise, I would be very appreciative for the feedback. I was visiting a local garden this morning when I saw this guy totally immersing himself. Even though it was a birdbath shot, it was a shot I couldn’t resist, especially with the daffodil in the background.

  • Stock photo: I had previously posted a processed version of this image (#433214) and just received a "4" rating on it from someone who had suggested they would prefer to see the original posted because they felt there were so many processing artifacts and halos around the bird that all detail had been lost. Since that idividual did not identify themselves, I can only hope that they will stumble on this posting and expand further on their thought/suggestions ... here is the original image. Whoever that individual is, let me say "thank you" for your honesty. I respect and would appreciate any additional feedback you might wish to provide me, not only as a gauge of how my work is rated by fellow photographers, but especially as a mechanism to improve on my photography skills. Let me also say that the first thing I knew was wrong with this image is simply due to a basic mistake of an amateur. I was so excited when I saw this bird, that in my haste to get some shots, I failed to pay attention to all my settings. I had been shooting some hawks on a very dreary morning the day before and had ISO set to 1250. It was very sunny when I shot this vermillion, but I didn’t think to drop the ISO. I probably could have gotten away with at least as low as 200. Since my photoshop skills are also pretty basic, I suspect I probably made an already bad situation even worse when I tried to enhance it. After cropping, I cloned all the branches out (probably introducing a lot of the artifacts the rater eluded to). After adjusting levels, highlights, and saturation in PSE 4.0, I used Nikon View to sharpen and then Neat Image to try to reduce the noise magnified by sharpening. So go ahead, have a field day critiquing my mistakes!! I am here to learn and genuinely do value constructive feedback. It would be nice if my critic would identify themselves as well, but if preference is to stay anonymous, I will gladly be satisfied with any feedback and pointers you care to provide.
