Alison, your timing can be far from perfect. It's easier than you would think. If you have a tripod and can control the shutter speed of your camera, you're all set. Put the camera on a tripod, aim in the direction of frequent lightning, set shutter speed to between 10 and 30 seconds (you have to adjust time based on aperture and ambient light + ISO) and open the shutter. I use a remote to release my shutter to avoid shaking the camera. If all that about shutter speed, aperture and ISO are a little new to you, I recommend the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Really opened up my understanding of photography.

Nice shot Chris.
A few weeks ago we had one of our rare thunder storms. I tried to get a shot of the lightning, but I was always looking in the wrong direction and never was able to capture anything.
Even if I had, it was certainly not as spectaular as your photo.

I I did and as far as as I can find the rhinos originate in the Miocene epoch approximately 1 million years ago but then I don't claim to be an expert like yourself. I just brought attention to a news report and that is always a bad source of information. The point is that these animals have been around for a long time and the major predator for them is man. We can split hairs all day and it still won't bring them back.
