I am not familiar with Nikon D40s metering but the over exposed (hot) area of white overwhelms the image. IMO it wouldn't be a huge issue IF the background was totally blurred or more interesting. if you are PS able, consider removing the boring buildings with a not descriptive blue or sky. I wonder if you were to try a slightly underexposing image and using a diffused fill flash to allow detail of curtains with out blowout or loosing the back-lit mood http://www.shutterpoint.com/spf/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=17637 2013-03-13T14:17:00 -05.00 The larger the image, the more lint or fibers are visible. Blowup the image to 100 or 200 percent to remove fibers in post processing and/or make sure the surface is checked just before the shots are taken. The glare concern has already been addressed. It seems to me the focus could be a little sharper, the tripod and shutter release as mentioned above would help with this. Also, the goose in the background is very distracting, blurring it out if you use manual settings would help.
