what macro lense do ou think are the best for macros? Right now my sigma 70/300mm has a macro function at 200/300mm, is that too much or too little?

I used to have a 70-210mm that had a macro function at the 210mm end. I shot many photos with it, but possibly these are not sharp enough for stock purposes, especially at today's standards.

Longer macros let you stay farther, but I imagine DOF becomes even shallower compared to a shorter lens, and steadyness may be an issue. I had a 100mm and DOF is already very shallow.

That is what I call an old lens I too have one, newer model, and tried it but it just isn't up to par anymore.
Lets hope others weigh in on the subject.

Nikkor use to refer to Nikormat camera lenses so I assumed tha it what your were talikng about.

I guess assumptions should be checked out before commenting on them.

Oh well.

I use a Nikkor 60, sometimes with extension tubes.

I use the Canon MP-E65mm it allows up to 5:1 ratios and when paird with the MT24EX dual macro flash system is unbeatable. The following was shot with the Tamron 90mm f2.8 DiMacro with the EX580MkII speedlight.

DOF is roughly the same with the same magnification in close up (macro) photography and is little affected by focal length. Longer focal length gives you longer working distance but it is more difficult to photograph hand held (180 mm life size lens I would recommend to use tripod). Fixed focus dedicated macro lenses definitely are superior over zoom lenses in terms of optical characteristics. Shorter focal length lenses as a rule costs much less.
