categories

Hi all - My name is Janet, and I am a new joiner
I have a quick question - is there some type of definition for the categories listed on SP? Some of the pics I am seeing are so random I don't understand how they are classified as they are. Does anyone in the company moderate and revise, or is more of a "post what you want wherever you want it" deal? I have recently joined, and am trying to figure all of this out. Am I missing something here?
