How can I improve A Dead Pelican?

Is this shot too "down"? Some who've seen it like the dark feel and some think it is too somber....Also, any general comments pro or con would be appreciated. I take most of my shots with prints in mind so the mind set involved in stock photography is a bit alien to me...
