We've all had it happen. A really great shot lined up and ready to be taken when disaster strikes. The flash fails. Someone moves into the shot. Nothing happens when the shutter button is pushed.

We all like to complain, so here's your chance to whine about the greatest shot ever than never happened because someone or something else screwed it up.

A few years back I was on a tour of a state park known for its alligatopr population. As our boat cruised along the lake I spotted a large bird coming off the tree line. Another even bigger bird was in pursuit. As they got a little closer I was able to see that the first bird was an osprey and the bird chasing it was a very angry bald eagle. Below them in the water floated a ten foot or so gator. I lined up my shot. Water/alligator/eagle attacking osprey. As I pressed the shutter release the tour got jumped in front of me yelling, "look at that"! Gah!

Instead of a magazine cover shot all I got was khaki covered butt. I've never come close to seeing such a thing again.

Robert:
Seems like we all have those stories.
Some years ago my wife and I were photographing wild flowers in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in a small meadow not far from the road. A herd of wild mustangs began working their way up from a morning drink at the river .The lead mare spotted us and watched from the top of a little knoll while the other mares and colts worked their way into the meadow.About the time we were in a position to get some decent shots a minivan came to a screeching halt on the highway and out jumps this guy running towards us and waving his point and shoot camera he got a great shot of a cloud of dust. We had the last laugh though because after he left the horses came back and we had a great time shooting several rolls of film while the horses munched on wild flowers.

No dramatic shots missed but more like the idiot just owning a camera in my case. I remember taking a bunch of night shots in Biarritz one time & forgetting to wind the film before opening the back & changing to a new one

I believe I miss the best shot every time I go out, but I get some good ones that do not escape the shutter. I could write a book on all the missed opportunities possibly. I find my success rate increases with how prepared I am and my focus I put into my targeted image.

Recently I was taking pictures of lighthouses during lake Michigans record storm which produced the highest wave recorded in Lake Michigans history at 23 feet. (google it) Anyway the very best shot was missed in my opinion due to a wave blast which soaked me and the 3-4 minute red and orange sky/cloud glow was gone along with the waves blasting impressively over the lighthouse. It was a breathtaking sunset.
