Yuri is an entrepeneur and businessman who is probably the best at what he does. I personally dislike his perfect antiseptic images but, man, is he able to move product. A lot of us amateurs are like garage bands who enjoy what we do and would probably like Justin Bieber's success but would absolutely hate to produce that kind of product.

I'm sure that Yuri's insights are also of use to amateurs who want to understand how the stock business works.

If you are totally into selling microstock there is some very good info here. But there is no question that he is a 1 in a million exception.

C:
Very good information and verifies what I have maintained all along and that is that there is possibilities in microstock to make money but it will take a lot of work. I have a small portfolio in a couple of agencies and get a steady but small income from them. If I had the drive and ambition to do so I could likely build on them and turn it into a full time job. As I have said on other occasions,I had one of those for 50+ years and don't really want another. There is no reason why someone with the drive and desire could not do it.
It would also require you to take pictures of what the customers want and not necessarily what the photographer likes which would be the biggie for most of us.

Agreed. To make substantial money in microstock, not only do you need a huge portfolio but you have to treat it strictly as a job, shoot what sells and not necessarilty what you enjoy shooting. Sort of like going to work every day and not necessarily enjoying your job. You have to treat it like a business to earn a living.

Microstock is really the Wallmart of stock photography. As in cheap generic crap that no one really needs. Like Wallmart it drives the quality mom and pop photographers out of business. Getty and the other quality stock houses are secure as they have irreplaceable historic stock images at their disposal and still get new “quality” images.

100 employees would require a $5 million annual payroll so I can’t see very many Shutterpoint members in that market.

If you want to make your money doing studio ish work that will sell adult diapers, corporate meetings, and pharmaceutical products this is your field.

Give me waterfalls, coastal scenes and historic cities or give me death!
