Using the old faithful IBM with XP after my computer crashed last night. Took it in to see if they can retrieve every thing lost.

William,
I am sorry to hear of your bad luck. I had a laptop that crashed and I took it to a computer store and they said "they ghosted" my information over. Even tho they could not turn it on..... they somehow accomplished it by ghosting. Good Luck!

With 250gb external hard drives going for $50 or less, having redundent back ups is not only a good idea, it's affordable.

Ouch!!!!
The new ones are what to watch out for(ie: your old faithful IBM is still going}like the difference between a horse and buggy and a new 2012 car, more stuff to go wrong and I'm sure you have heard of Murphy's law ,if it can go wrong it will. Chris is right the cost of a good back up is usually less expensive that repairs especially if you can't recover the data.
Good luck!!!
Mel

Indeed; ouch!

Get Carbonite.

Along with Carbonite giving me an off site back up, I also have a drive mirroring my photography drive. I also have another backed up drive that I keep in a fire safe.

Two or so months ago, my photography drive kaput. Not a good day. Though with my local back ups along with Carbonite, I had all back in a day.

I had carbonite and it didn't do anything.
Pretty so I'm going to have 3 computers to work with especially if they can fix the other two.

Carbonite didn't do anything? Not sure what you mean Bill?

Sorry you lost your photos. Some folks, including myself have offered some suggestions to keep this from happening again. Use or don't use. Loose or don't loose.

Sorry to hear that, Bill.

I have 3 external HDs, and I try to do backups frequently, or at least after special photo downloads, before I delete the images from the memory card.

I have been backing them up but not recently. Carbonite was suggested as something I should have used the thing is I had carbonite on that computer and I still lost them .
live and learn the real bad part is people were asking for some of those photographs I lost and have received notice by those trying to retrieve them is they can't get at them.

Your memory card can also serve as a backup, though a bit pricey. I keep all of mine--in a fireproof box and/or safe deposit box. (Best to keep them off-site if possible.)

This past year I had a serious natural gas leak under my home and had to evacuate. I could have been on the news that night, and left with no home (or worse). Fortunately the gas people got things under control fairly quickly, but it was scary and very serious. In that case I was given five minutes to gather my important things. Where do you start? Better have a plan.

I do agree with those who suggested the external drives (now huge) and a system such as Carbonite.

So I seem to be confused Bill. If you had Carbonite installed, was it backing up files? If it was then your files, hopefully to include your photos would be off site at Carbonite. Reinstall Carbonite on your next computer, and perform a restore.

I don't get it....

I did not think twice about an external hard drive when I bought my Dell 4550 11 yrs ago. It still runs great but I have always kept my photos on a 250 GB Western Digital and all of my music on a 160Gb Western Digital drive. I never run these drives to an extreme so they will likely last a very long time. A headache removed.

You can always hope Thomas.

I highly recommend Carbonite. Just the piece of mind that you have off site protection goes a long ways toward a good backup plan. I also keep one drive in a fire safe. I try to take it out and update twice a year.
