This March, Nikon releases the new D800. Looks like the initial Street Price is going to be $2999.

Specs:
35.9 x 24.0mm CMOS FX Format Sensor
36.3MP Resolution
EXPEED 3 Image-Processing Engine
3.2" LCD Monitor
Nikon F Mount Lens Mount
Optical Low-Pass Filter
Eye-Level Pentaprism
Viewfinder 1920 x 1080/30/25/24p HD Video Capture
Built-In Flash + i-TTL Flash Control
Matrix/Center-Weighted/Spot Metering

FX cameras can crop their sensors to use DX lenses. This wastes much of the capability of the FX (full frame) camera but it doesn't waste the DX lenses. DX lenses reduce image circles that only cover the smaller DX sensor. Older film lenses will also work very well with FX cameras.

With 36MPs at a reasonable price (compared to other cameras of this nature), this is going to be a huge seller for Nikon ! If you want one I'd suggest getting on an order list now because these are going to be tough to get. As always, B&H has the best prices.

I think this is the first DSLR that will compete with medium format cameras for overall image quality. I have to believe they can't get too many more MP's on an FX sensor without introducing excessive noise. Everything I've seen about this camera indicates it will live up to the hype.

Chris,

I believe the D800E is taking it in that direction. The Nikon D800E will come without an anti-aliasing filter, which means that, in theory, it should resolve as much detail as the medium format digital backs.

I am so very tempted. Have even looked at a trade in for my D700. Though will more than like wait for a price drop in the future.

Stephen,
I think, if majority of your lenses are for FF, then in D800 you will find incredible camera for landscape photography.

Buying this camera is really a no-brainer if you are a serious photographer and have the money. And the price for what you will get is way less in comparison to the competition. You could easily blow up fine art photography to 40x60 using this camera with results as sharp as a tack.
