What have you found to be essential to carry with you in your camera bag? What have your found to be helpful, but not necessarily essential?

I remember seeing a thread on this topic several years ago, but I can't find it in the archives. If anyone could point me to it, that would be helpful too. Thanks.

I have a case that rolls!

two bodies, back up batteries for each, filters, cleaners, macro lens 60mm prime / 28-200mm zoom / 18-115mmzoom / 200-500mm zoom

two flashes and small case AA batteries, flash diffusers, light bounce rings, clips and things to clasp and off shoe cable

shutter release remote

chap stick!

finderless gloves hat

rain cover or baggies for boddies when needed

cameras manual

hmmm probably still forgot something...most stays in car and a smaller bag will go with me on a walk out with body and lens of choice it has mostly that and lens cleaners and filters (chapstick and water)

tripods can go on case when strolling!.... mono pod is always in car for emergency!!

Thanks, Laura. That's helpful. As a writer, I'd definitely have something to write with--to keep notes on impressions, info, and more about an excursion, a particular location . . . . Property and model releases too. I need to come up with some generic releases.

What else, everyone? I like to be organized and ready for anything. I'm also trying to decide on the best type of bag (e.g. a bag within a bag on wheels?). But how much stuff realistically needs to go into it?

Connie, here's the link to that old thread. Some funny posts for those of you who joined after Zol left.

Greg, many thanks again for locating that old thread. I studied (and enjoyed!) it this morning. Lots of laughs, plus some real helpful information. I missed knowing Zol. He's so funny!

Between that link and what you provided, Laura, I have a pretty comprehensive list now for my not-yet-purchased camera bag. I'm sure more ideas will come in time. I appreciate you, my friends. Thanks so much!
