Jepthah, leader of the Isrealites promised to make a sacrifice of the first person he came upon if he was granted victory over the Ammonites. He returned triumphant but met his daughter leading a victory parade, when he saw her he ripped his clothes and said, Alas! my daughter you have brought me very low.... for I have vowed to the lord and I cannot go back.
