Photographer's Description

The Dead Sea and the mountains of Jordan in the distance. This is taken from the ancient fortress of Masada in the Judean Desert of Israel. Over 900 Jews took refuge from the Romans in Masada in 70 AD but committed mass suicide rather than be taken prisoner. Masada was built on a mesa 1300 feet above the Dead Sea, which is 420 meters or 1378 feet below sea level.
