Photographer's Description

Fat Margareth (Paks Margareeta) is one of the 26 remaining towers of Tallinn Old Town (Vana Tallinn) medieval city walls, 2-km of the original 13th century defense wall that protected Estonia's capital. This round cannon tower was built for defense the seaward side of town, and was later used as a storehouse and a prison. Today it houses the Maritime Museum (Meremuseum), showing the history of shipping and fishing industries in this important Baltic city. Although heavily bombed at the end of WWII, most of this historical part of Tallinn survived, and its unique preserved ensemble of medieval buildings and walls was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997.
