  • Stock photo: A Bonaparte’s Gull makes a quick exit from the surface of a lake in central Alaska.The Bonaparte’s Gull is named after Charles Lucien Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon, who was a leading ornithologist in the 1800s in America and Europe. This small gull has an adult body that is roughly 17 inches (45 cm) in length with a wingspan of 35-40 inches (90-100 cm). This gull has a dark gray to black head and bill, a white neck, gray body and wings, and bright orange-red legs and feet. It is one of the few gulls that prefers to nest in trees during mating season.During the summer, the Bonaparte’s gull can be found from the Great Lakes to as far north as Alaska. While inland during the summer, they feed chiefly on insects that they capture in the air, pick from croplands, or gather from the surface of lakes or ponds, Bonaparte’s gulls migrate south to spend the winter on the Pacific coast where they feed on small fish, crustacea, snails and marine worms.

  • Stock photo: Many years ago this sweeping Alaskan valley was the scene of several gold mines and many miners cabins. Today it is uninhabited except for hikers and an ocassional ATV on the dirt trail which winds its way through the bottom land. Some of the old shacks are still standing, a couple are visible here, in the middle right hand portion of the photograph. This is beautiful country with abundunt photographic opportunities. On this particular morning I had to leave my house at 3 a.m. in order to get here for sunrise at 4:30 a.m. After a steep hike up the mountainside, and then waiting patiently for quite some time, I was finally rewarded with some wonderful lighting as the sun broke through the storm clouds and cast random patches of golden light on the valley floor.

  • Stock photo: Early morning scene at a small lake in central Alaska. The sun was yet to rise above the mountains on the left, and I could hear the song of a single Loon, hidden behind the veil of mist which was rising slowly from the surface of the calm water. Otherwise, there was complete and utter silence. I stayed here for quite some time, enjoying this peaceful beauty. We’ve had some turmoil in our lives recently, family stuff. This was a gift to me, I decided.....and my soul was ready for it.

  • Stock photo: I found this old abandoned cabin a few hundred feet off a dirt road in central Alaska. There was no road to the building, only an overgrown trail, but it was well worth the wet hike. I spent more than an hour here making photographs. Using an old political banner for a roof repair was pretty creative, I thought, even though it looks like the stove pipe was broken in the process.
